The Shops at Yale and Paier College of Art created an artful winter wonderland along Chapel Street with delicate, white-paper sculptures in storefronts for the holiday season. A group of more than twenty students and professors from Paier College of Art demonstrate their display skills as they designed sculptures using paper and glue to create a series of unique installations. The students and professors split into teams and worked directly with owners and managers to design sculptures that complement the merchandise or menu offered in each business. The artists worked under the direction of Vladimir Shpitalnik, who received his MFA from Yale University’s School of Drama in Design and currently teaches at Paier College of Art. Paier College of Art, founded by Yale University Alumnus Edward T. Paier, unveiled the windows in time for Black Friday and Small Business Saturday. All of the supplies were purchased viaHull’s Art Supply & Framing!
Here’s what some of the business owners had to say about the installations:
Elida Fine of Peter Indorf Jewelers said, ““We were absolutely delighted with the beautiful job that the students at Paier College of Art did for us. They were wonderful to work with and very talented. Their windows could have been on Madison Avenue. We received many compliments from customers as well as people who were just walking by, and we would welcome them back again next year.”
Tom Maloney, Owner of Raggs, said, “I wish to see another installation that covers the stores on Chapel and ties us together like this one. This was creative arts that brought people downtown to look into our windows.”
“The windows we create for the Holiday season are very important to us,” said Derek Simpson, Owner of Derek Simpson Goldsmith. “This is the first year that we have relinquished the design and creation to an outside entity. We were very impressed with the clean, concise and creative beauty of the window designs by the Paier College of Art students. Janet Croog, Rachel Wendt and Dan Cogan, worked miracles in paper that we could not have imagined possible, especially in such a limited time frame. Customers and passersby have been delighted by the innovative Holiday Windows. We hear the raves daily that the creators should be able to enjoy!”
“The windows were a magical addition to Chapel Street,” said Kimberly Pedrick, Owner of idiom. “It was remarkable the designs that the talented students from Paier College of Art created.”

Wow! This has to be absolutely one of the best outreach projects, value-of-art promotions, support-your-local-business ideas I have EVER seen. The work is gorgeous and delightful, the concept is exceptional, and the execution simply over the top. I really, really love this. So glad to know about it!
Glad you liked it Tom. It is up for just a little while longer so you should head downtown to see it if you haven't already.
