A Sparrow Grows In New Haven (pt. 2)
by Mike Franzman
in this edition, we pick up from last week’s post,

| From day 20 to 40, Sammie The Sparrow was flying around the house very well, and slowly learning to eat on her own. |
![]() |
| On Day 53, we took her outside, and let her fly around freely, while we stayed in sight. |
![]() |
| Sammie The Sparrow happily explored the trees in the area, and kept chirping her location to us. |
![]() |
| Exploring the neighbor’s ivy. |
![]() |
| On her early excursions outdoors, she always returned within about 20 minutes, to let us bring her back in for a bite to eat. |

| Though she eats seeds on her own now, she still loves a dropper full of baby cereal. |

| When not outside, Sammie spent the summer in her huge cage, generously donated by a facebook fan!
I try to leave the doors of her cage open when possible, so she is not actually “caged”. |

| Day 56 – out for another flight |

| Exploring The Lawn |

| Back to my shoulder, one of her favorite landing spots |
![]() |
| Though her cage is nearby, she prefers sleeping in this fleece-lined baseball cap. |

| Day 66 – experiencing the trees of early September |
![]() |
| Day 67, enjoying some sunflower kernels on my knee |
![]() |
| Day 75 – we continue to bring her outside when we can.
After flying around outside, she still always returns to our arm or shoulder |
![]() |
| Back on to the roof of her cage, and we bring her back inside the house. |
