New Haven Independent editor Paul J. Bass
Hey Elm Citizens! Lucy here, giving a blessedly microphone-less greeting for one of the first times this week. Honestly, it feels a little weird not to have that bubble of wire and foam hovering in front of my mouth. But probably good weird. Like, night off weird.

That’s because the news outlet for which I work, the New Haven Independent, has finally launched WNHH, New Haven’s newest home for community radio and hyper-local reporting. From 4 a.m. to 4 p.m., we broadcast on 103.5 FM and go out to a stream that reaches anyone with internet access. Then from 4 p.m. to 3:59 the next morning, we’re all online … which is kind of what we do best. Three and a half days in, and we’re definitely on the ride to a grassroots kind of crazytown. But goodness, is it the coolest ride I’ve been on yet.

I’ve been fiercely behind what the Independent represents since I started writing for it part-time a year and a half ago. Back then, I was working for the Yale University Art Gallery and thought that New Haven was my two-year stepping stone from my MA degree to my Ph.D. (stop me if you’ve heard that one before). And then I met NHI editor Paul Bass and my moral compass, dampened by hours bonding with Judith Butler in a dingy art library, sprang wildly back to full capacity, and pointed forward.

WNHH expands his vision. As one of the Independent‘s commenters noted after we launched, it acknowledges that “there is no substitute for good discussion,” and builds on that in a big way. It’s also, I think, another page in his — and our, and my — love letter to this city, written in flowing, painstakingly beautiful handwriting and fully outfitted for the twenty-first century.

So turn on. Tune in. Join the conversation. We’re listening with open minds, ears, and hearts.
