Hey New Haveners! Last week, I got to check out the new Anchor Spa on assignment for the New Haven Independent. A big fan of the old Anchor, with its fat neon sign, curmudgeonly but loveable staff, and unending smell of something burning, I was hesitant about the idea. Cocktails and I don’t have a great history, and everything I had heard about the bar sounded like New Haven had finally found an edible (drinkable?) marriage of gentrification and imperialism that made me feel slimy all over.
But I had a great panel of taste-testers — NHI colleague Aliyya Swaby, New Haven’s Transportation and Parking Director Doug Hausladen, writer Daisy Abreu, and grand orchestrator of everything artistically good Andy Wolf — and was excited about spending time with them. Here are a few shots from that evening.
