Last night for the first time ever, the Yale Peabody Museum hosted a musical perforce. The initiative was spearheaded by, and in collaboration with the Yale Schwarzman Center.
Gelsey Bell’s opera Morning//Mourning explores a world where humanity has vanished, leaving nature to reclaim the Earth. Through an ensemble of five vocalists and multi-instrumentalists, the opera tells of forests regrowing, new species evolving, and human artifacts eroding, blending whimsical storytelling with political and ethical reflections on humanity’s impact on the environment.
The dynamic lighting in Morning//Mourning plays a crucial role in bringing Bell’s vision to life. By using innovative and immersive lighting techniques, the performance accentuates the transition from the bleakness of a post-human world to the vibrant reawakening of nature. The lighting shifts to highlight different narrative moments.
