Ben and Jerry of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, Stumping for Bernie Sanders in Portsmouth, N.H.
Hi Elm Citizens! Today I returned from New Hampshire with lots of memories and even more photos, so here is part II of my on-the-road primary adventure. I’ll be back next week with photos of New Haven and a little more sleep. Hope you enjoy these, which come from both sides of the partisan line, in the meantime.
On Thursday I was covering Marco Rubio and Hillary Clinton, who appeared at town halls and debate watch parties in Portsmouth and Durham, towns on New Hampshire’s tiny section of coastline. Talk about two different candidates: Rubio riled up the crowd by saying “We must defeat Hillary Clinton!” while Clinton spent time extolling the values of her door knockers and campaign volunteers.
Then came the McIntyre-Shaheen 100 Club Dinner, the New Hampshire Democratic Party’s biggest annual fundraiser — and a chance for Bernie and Hillary to duke it out in a vat of jello in real time, giving pitches to New Hampshire’s establishment democrats (all of whom have endorsed Clinton) and political elite before the big day.
And canvassing with some Connecticut volunteers, who braved the snow to get to know some of Webster, New Hampshire’s, citizens — and a special cat for Bernie.
I ran into New Havener/political junkie Aaron Goode and Yale grad Dan Weeks later that day, at a conference dedicated to campaign finance reform …
Covered these dudes, who are decidedly less cool than Goode and Weeks …
… And ended things talking to people about their campaign signs in downtown Manchester.
