Yesterday, I had the privilege of photographing Be Your Own Hero, a powerful new play that pays tribute to the life and legacy of Dr. Fred F. Smith. He is the beloved “Freddy Fixer,” a true New Haven Hero. I’ve photographed the Freddy Fixer Parade year after year. This performance felt like a powerful extension of that legacy. It was something that deserved to be preserved through photography for the community and for history.
Through heartfelt performances, and dynamic storytelling, the production brings to life the man behind one of New Haven’s most enduring community traditions—the Freddy Fixer Parade. Written by Fred F. Smith Jr. and co-written and directed by Steve Driffin, the play captures both the personal and public impact of Dr. Smith’s work. It reminds us that true heroism begins with courage, service, and a commitment to uplifting others.
