Honoring the Oldest Black American Parade in the Northeast

June 4, 2023 by Chris Randall 11 Comments

The Freddy Fixer Parade was back in full swing this year. So many people worked behind the scenes and on the front line, ensuring the event’s success. This vibrant parade, named after one of its founders, Mr. Frederick “Freddie Fixer” Smith, is a celebration of community pride, unity, and revitalization.

The Freddy Fixer Parade traces its origins back to 1962 when New Haven, like many urban centers, faced significant social and economic challenges. Freddy Fixer, a beloved community activist and leader, recognized the need for positive change and decided to take action. He spearheaded a grassroots movement focused on cleaning up neglected neighborhoods, improving living conditions, and instilling a sense of pride and ownership within the community.

Here are some of the highlights of today’s parade. I put a link to an expanded album with all of the photos (444 of them!) that I took today at the bottom of this post. You’ll be able to download and use photos from that gallery for personal use. If you’re interested in using photos commercial purposes please contact me at chris@ilovenewhaven.org

Love the photos, but in your written introduction I was surprised to find no mention that he was a doctor.
