A friend and I decided to wander around New haven one Sunday afternoon and see what we could capture. Amongst the beautiful architecture and bustling streets, we saw from a distance a group of people seemingly in their own musical world so we decided to check it out. We were surprised to find it was an outdoor Church Service on the green. We stood at the edge of the circle watching as a small group sang and beat rhythmically on “drums” made of buckets and other handmade instruments. A small crowd formed and everyone seemed to be enjoying it. Apparently this service is held every Sunday and is open to everyone of all denominations. They play music on whatever instruments they can make, and were incredibly warm to anyone who asked to join the service.
As we moved on we saw this spry elderly woman riding a bike. Immediately I thought “WOW!” She reminded me of of my grandmother, she wore animal prints, with bright colored accents and a spunky bag and bright purple coat. I stopped her immediately and asked if I could photograph her. She couldn’t imagine why anyone would want to take her picture but she posed for me anyway. She then proudly told me she in her 70’s and bikes everywhere. This amazing woman is also a practicing therapist in New Haven. I also included a behind the scenes shot of when I approached her to photograph her.
The last series of images were from a spot on Whalley Ave. near York St. We came across a protest. The woman were protesting the loss of life in the war and how we need to bring our soldiers home that’s also where we found the rock dedications. Overall the day was fascinating and left me realizing how amazing New Haven is, and also reminded me why I love street photography so much.
